Your Spring Trend Starter Kit
The nostalgia was overwhelming as I was putting together this edit. When I first started out in magazine styling over twenty years ago now (!!), I was researching a lot of these exact trends to put in glossy pages, style on models and fit on celebrities. I distinctly remember coveting Chloe’s boho delights and platform sandals the first time around, and here we are again!
There’s a lot to get excited for as we enter a new season this weekend. Firstly, a lot of the trends you’ll be seeing online and in stores are adaptable and very wearable for a wide range of ages, body shapes and style preferences. I’ve struggled recently with what’s been available appearing too Gen Z/Alpha for me, but thankfully that doesn’t seem to be the case this Spring/Summer. I’ve also been pleasantly surprised to learn that you can wear things twenty years later in a new way — case in point, bubble hems and shorts! I’m excited for some fresh silhouettes, new colour-ways and to bare a bit more skin as we finally get warm weather and sunshine.
Here’s a starting point to the new season trends available.
Shorts
Choose from knee-length Bermudas, retro-sporty silhouettes, cotton poplin drawstring styles or very classic tailored options. This is the first time in a while we’ve had so much choice when it comes to the humble short so why not make the most of it and bag yourself a few?.
Modern Boho
I’ve been a Chloé stan for many, many years, so to see the brand making a long awaited comeback thanks to new designer Chemena Kamali has given me all the feels. She’s brought back the fashion house’s signature whimsical appeal with sheer silk, ruffles, oversized sleeves, platform heels and fringing making its way down the runway and onto the high street. It’s most definitely a boho summer if you want it to be.
Yellow
To be fair, there are actually a lot of pops of colours entering the new season, including purple, sky blue, and of course, mellow yellow. This pastel hue is giving holiday vibes with its sorbet-y, sunshine feel and I am surprisingly here for it. Big fan of a yellow dress, which is new for me.
Sheer
Disclaimer, you can get a lot of cheap, bad and tacky looking sheer clothing, but you can also get some very demure, very mindful and very cutesy styles, too. This kind of follows on from the modern boho comeback, with draping being a big feature of many sheer tops and dresses.
Preppy
To be clear, I’m not talking super sporty here, but more modern-day preppy where pleats, polos and button-ups feature alongside fun accessories and denim. Think Miu-Miu, Polo Ralph Lauren and J.Crew with more layering and humour.
Bubble Hems
Why do I suddenly want a bubble hem skirt? Because they’re kinda adorable, that’s why. I especially love a bubble hem on an unexpected skirt or dress — it’s equal parts playful and chic.
Minimalist Sandals
Again, this takes me back to a time where all I wore was K. Jacques minimal leather sandals, and thankfully, I still own some and will certainly be resurrecting them from the dead soon. Thongs are the heroes here in all iterations, while slip-on sandals with toe-rings, as well as T-bar shapes, are making a good case for barely-there trends sweeping both footwear and clothing this season.
Shoulder Bags
Let’s face it, crossbody bags have certainly had their time so let’s make way for this much more useful carry-all. Choose from suede, leather or raffia and see how this ladylike shape adds instant cool-factor to your outfits.
