Versatile Tees & Tanks

Ok, real talk, I kind of lose interest when fashion identities online start waxing lyrical about “the perfect white tee”. Anyone can find a perfect white top by simply entering their closest Uniqlo or similar. It really isn’t that hard or groundbreaking, nor does it have to be.

I guess the allure of this very handy, very necessary and very ubiquitous wardrobe staple is that everyone owns several, and continually needs to update their tees and tanks. As much as these are often classified as “forever” items of clothing, they really are not. Constant wear and tear, washing cycles, yellowing armpits, stains, mystery small holes, shrinkage, stretching — these guys are often the first piece in your wardrobe that need replacing each season. Which is where this edit comes in…

Yes, I do rate Uniqlo tees (I like the Uniqlo U, and the new Mini T-Shirt, sized up in both as they run small), but I also frequently try styles and price points from a lot of different brands. You see, it’s not often about the actual tee or tank, but what you’re wearing it with and how you’re wearing it that makes all the difference. I personally think it’s worthwhile to have a lot of different options when it comes to sleeve lengths, slim vs oversized fits, fabric choices (silk, knitted or cotton — I avoid linen tees), and colour ways, as I often rely on these basics to wear with everything from a full summer skirt to jeans and shorts, and even more dressy bottoms, in the warmer months.

I really love the look of the M&S Pure Cotton Ribbed Tee this season, The Bassike Slim Scoop Tank, The Tapered Waist Top by H&M and almost all of the tanks and tees from Mango. As much as this season is leaning towards a more fitted and cropped style of T-Shirt, you still can’t go wrong with a classic shape or slightly boxy fit. Same goes with tanks — thin straps, thick straps — it really doesn’t matter in the end, as long as you’re comfortable.

Here are a lot of great options to buy and wear all summer long.
