Skirts To Wear When It’s Cold
The easy option is always jeans, I get it, but there comes a point in the depths of winter when wearing denim jeans and a knit gets well and truly tired. Also, as someone who isn’t tall or straight up and down, I must say this is a bad season for wearing jeans. I feel frumpy and uncomfortable every time I do wear them (are “mom” jeans a trap?), so here’s my case for wearing a skirt instead!
My preference is a maxi length that hits just on the ankle or slightly above, I believe some retailers are calling this a midaxi length — in between a midi and a maxi. If you have more height than me (not hard), then a midi would be just as flattering. Maxi skirts that cover the ankle are generally better suited to taller people, and minis can work for almost everyone, particularly in a tailored A-line style.
The tricky part about skirts in winter comes down to footwear, but it doesn’t have to be. A slimline sneaker, like a Samba, Gazelle or Onituska Tiger (in this colour, so good), works very well for day-dressing. A ballet flat or loafer is also a great option for a more corporate look. At night, I’ve found a slingback heel, knee-high boot or slip-on mule to look chic and flattering when worn with all skirt lengths. I’d avoid ankle boots (cut your legs off) or a pointy-pump (way too officey) if you can.
There are some gorgeous options around from all different price points, so if you needed a sign to try a skirt this season instead of covering up in jeans, then this is it…
