Pumps That Look Good (And Keep Your Toes Warm!)

There won’t be a harder working type of shoe in your wardrobe other than a great pump. These unsung heroes do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to winter evening footwear, finishing off corporate outfits and making jeans and a dressy top look sleek and cool.

The thing is though, if you get the shape wrong, the finish too shiny or the heel height too low or too high, the whole look is toast. Such a fine line between a really great and a really bad pump, but I’m here with some tips to make your next purchase foolproof…

  • A singback is a nice way to update a classic pump, and often lends itself to a rounder toe and chunkier heel as well as a pointy toe and kitten heel. This is a good option if you’re wearing a pump with a dress or skirt.

  • There’s something about a low heel (kitten or slightly higher) that strangely makes a pump look both elegant and cool at the same time. This is a great look if you don’t need added height but also don’t want a flat shoe, either.

  • Milky white pumps are having a moment and can replace most instances where you’d regularly opt for black. This unlikely hue is great with denim.

  • If you only need one pair of black heels this season, I’d opt for a mid-heel, black suede style, as perfectly executed by the Sam Edelman Vienna pumps.

  • For a modern and slightly man-repeller look, go for the opposite of a toe-cleavage style, where the front of a pump has a more elongated, covered-up feel. Tony Bianco’s Dries Bordeaux Nappa Heels are a great example of this.
