The “Outfit” Is Back

Fashion trends are inching dangerously close to a time most of us can remember for better or worse, and that is the 00s. Baggy jeans, cropped T-shirts, low-slung everything, cargo pants… I could go on, but I really don’t want to.

Instead of focusing on the micro trends doing the rounds via the Gen Z set, I’m going to zone in on the best of what’s coming back and dominating the virtual and real-life store shelves — outfits. It’s been a while since “looks” that are somehow both polished and casual were dominating, but they are and they will through the next season. Dressy tops with jeans, matching separates, corporate-esque silhouettes… We’re undoubtedly entering a time where being put-together is the look du jour for both day and evening, and I’m pretty excited about it.

As we move closer to cold-weather dressing, you’ll notice the importance of having enough basics to mix and match with other items in your wardrobe. Now is the time to invest in the shirts, the denim, the pretty skirts and the good shoes, because they’ll be on constant repetition with the right accessories and accent pieces. Belts (worn with absolutely everything), silver jewellery (gold too if you can’t commit), ladylike tailoring and mini and maxi lengths will take you back to a time where activewear was solely for the purpose of exercising, not daywear.

Polish off those styling-hats, it’s time to welcome back the return of the outfit.
