It’s Skirts and Shorts Season

When I asked over on Instagram what you wanted to see next on the site, the very best skirts and shorts edit was a close second to holiday dressing, so I’m sticking to my word and bringing you the best I’ve found online right now.

Strangely, there is almost too much choice in both categories and it does make things slightly overwhelming when searching, particularly when each item depends heavily on what you feel comfortable in, shape-wise. The good news is this also means that there is something for everyone when you do look, so I can recommend the following all-rounder styles for you to try and get on board with.

Boxer-style shorts, which you would have seen in abundance with matching shirts recently, aren’t going anywhere and come in a range of colours and prints now. I can vouch for these in terms of ease of dressing and comfort — pair them back with a shirt (matching or not) or dress down with a T-shirt or ribbed singlet. These are casual, cool and work for most day-occasions.

Tailored shorts, both long and short, work well for dressier options and come in a range of lengths for all comfort-levels. Bermuda-style are still available, and they sit higher on the waist and longer on the leg and can be a flattering cut on most people, particularly as they cinch in your waist when worn with a tucked-in top.

Denim shorts don’t seem to be going anywhere soon, but I would avoid heavily distressed and micro-mini styles this season and instead opt for a higher waistband and longer lengths, also a slightly A-line shape is flattering on curvier bodies. You don’t have to spend a lot on these, the chain stores we know and love always have good iterations each season which last.

In terms of skirts, mini and maxi styles reign supreme, with everything from tiered, cotton, A-line, printed, pleated and sarong/wrap-styles taking over. The elastic waistband-versions from resort brands such as Faithfull and Matteau are no-brainers when it comes to day or night dressing, bonus points for comfort, too.

Here are my top picks for both categories right now, and there’s never been a better time to update your wardrobe for the warmer months ahead. Enjoy!
