Your Autumn/Winter Denim Cheat Sheet
Firstly, let me start by saying that the style names for denim jeans can vary greatly between stores and designers. To make sense of it all, I’ve grouped these styles into categories that I personally think are the best fit.
For example, to me, "relaxed fit" refers to a straight-ish leg with a bit of extra width and length, while "wide leg" means a fitted waist with extra room from top to bottom. "Barrel leg" (also known as "horseshoe shape") can vary greatly, from exaggerated to subtle, but it always features a distinctive curved silhouette. Sometimes, this curve is highlighted with stitching or panels. As for "straight leg," this is exactly what it sounds like—no tapering and no resemblance to a skinny leg, which typically has a more streamlined shape and often includes lycra or a jegging-like fit.
Confused? Don’t be. Just know that these, in my opinion, are the most relevant, realistic, and wearable denim styles for women this season. I’m aware of the rumblings about skinny jeans making a comeback, and of course, the return of bootcut thanks to Kendrick Lamar and the Super Bowl. But, personally, I don’t find these shapes flattering or wearable right now, so I’m going to let those trends pass me by (for now...).
When it comes to buying jeans, my advice hasn’t changed much over the past couple of years. I buy both designer and chain store varieties and love them all equally. H&M makes excellent jeans, as does Cos. Agolde and Citizens of Humanity also have great options. Each brand serves a different purpose, and I wear them all happily, depending on my mood and the occasion. Honestly, I haven’t noticed a huge difference in quality between them.
Sizing can be tricky when it comes to jeans, and I completely understand the struggle. But always keep in mind that most jeans will stretch over time—sometimes a full size or more—so don’t worry too much if they feel a bit tight when you first try them on. When my jeans start to feel baggy after a few wears, I simply wash them and find that they return to their original size once dry.
I’m also a big fan of having jeans hemmed if necessary. The right length can make all the difference when it comes to the overall look. Additionally, having a variety of washes and colours is key for switching things up. This season, cream is overtaking stark white, dark blue denim without any distressing is gaining popularity as clean denim, and all shades of black are available for either a grunge or evening look, depending on your styling.
It’s the perfect time to invest in jeans, whatever your preference, so let’s get to it.
