These Are a Few of My Really Random, Favourite Things

In the spirit of passing on good suggestions to likeminded people, I thought I’d do something a little different for today’s edit and pass on some secret (and no so secret) gems I love and rely on in the fashion, food, home and general lifestyle space.

This edit was prompted by a delivery of a super-handy new piece of underwear I recently bought (more on that below) and got me thinking about all the really random things that bring me joy outside of the norm. I’m well aware it’s not so sexy to wax lyrical about a blender or a type of hair tie, but to be honest it’s always these out-of-the-box recommendations from people I trust that always end up being the most joy-inducing and life-changing.

So, I guess if you enjoy my style and overall vibe, then hopefully you’ll appreciate these slightly random things I bought, use, have and rate very highly. Yes, even a toilet brush cleaner. Here goes nothing!

Lyolyte Racerback Bra by Boody

This humble little bra has shaken my world right now. I wear a lot of tanks in summer and a few of those are racerback style — either subtly tapered in at the back or the standard style. I’ve always liked this look but hated the fact that they required a strapless bra. Not anymore. I honestly didn’t believe this would fix the issue of having to wear uncomfortable strapless bras or having visible shoulder straps but this somehow fits perfectly under every racerback tank I own while being super comfortable and giving ample support. I’m a 10B and got the XS, if that helps (they also do a fuller-bust version for more support). A great underwear staple to own.

H&M Pyjamas

You guys, do not sleep on this. Or perhaps, in this case, do?

H&M pyjamas are elite in every way and my secret weapon when wanting to look chic but comfy in bed. If you look at the right time you can get seriously stylish all-cotton sets for a fraction of the cost of more designer versions. They’re well made, really well cut and do everything a good pair of pyjamas should. I always size up for comfort and have a few different styles for all the seasons, from shirt dresses to tanks and boxers and everything in between. This is always my first stop when wanting new nightwear and the same goes for my kids. Love them.

Tissue Box Covers

  1. Clear Acrylic Tissue Holder by Amazon

  2. Chubby Ceramic Tissue Box Holder by Gigi & Tom

  3. Tangier Stripe Tissue Box Cover by Alice Palmer & Co.

I appreciate this is going to be very niche, but I can’t stand unsightly tissue boxes so have used these acrylic covers for over a decade. I love them and also appreciate that they make an everyday staple item look kinda cool. I’m not ever going to be someone who doesn’t have everyday essentials in an accessible place — that is not the reality of living with kids — so if I’m going to have tissues around the house they may as well blend into the decor. I love the striped and upholstered versions for bedrooms, too.

Graduated 14kt gold-vermeil hoop earrings by Otiumberg

Simple gold hoop earrings seem easy enough to find, right? Wrong. Very wrong. From bad shapes to bad quality — some are too big, some are too small, this somewhat simple accessory can give the most headaches when you’re on the hunt for the perfect pair. When I received these for Christmas a couple of years ago (err, after sending my husband the link) I knew I was onto a good thing. I can confirm, years later, that they are the ideal every day and evening hoop. The slightly graduated shape is elegant, they are the perfect size that don’t look out of place with a T-shirt or formal dress, and they don’t tarnish at all. I love them and am wearing them right now!

Joseph Joseph Flex Smart Toilet Brush, from Myer

Are you thinking I’ve lost my mind right now? I assure you I haven’t. If you care about minimal styling, good hygiene and a well-functioning product, there is no better toilet brush for your bathroom. Step away from the faux marble and don’t even think about those ugly white plastic ones. This toilet brush does the job better than the others, looks clean and gets into all the nooks and crannies of your toilet bowl without getting gross. Not sexy but very necessary!

Bambi Kaftan by Sarah-Jane Clarke

At the time of writing this, this item has actually sold out online, but I have faith it will be restocked! I’m very drawn to this for many reasons, but mainly because it’s the antithesis of what many influencers are saying we should be wearing right now — namely a shitload of black, white and beige. Garance Dore actually wrote about this in her newsletter today and I felt so validated. Dressing in monochrome does not make anyone more stylish nor does it mean you aren’t following trends — some (me) would argue the whole black pants and white shirt vibe is the biggest trend of all and one which I hope to see the back of very soon. I love a good print, I love a feminine silhouette, and I do not want anyone on Instagram or TikTok telling me that the only way to dress is with “classic” items in one colour. Prints and colour 4eva!

All Natural Seasonings, by Mingle from supermarkets or online.

You may have seen these at your local Woolies or Coles, and if you haven’t already tried them then I implore you to soon. I use the “Everything Bagel” seasoning on eggs and avocado religiously, and have recently started using the “Use Me on Everything” seasoning on lamb cutlets and chicken. Both are out-of-this-world delicious and made without any additives or sugar. Such an excellent Australian product that truly takes your humble protein up a notch.
