Need-To-Have Knitwear
It’s that time again! If you want to update your knitwear this year but don’t quite know where to start, I’ve got you. My advice this season is likely very similar to last — don’t worry too much about trends when it comes to your knits. Very basic, very classic styles are always worthwhile investments as it’s all about sizing and what you wear with them that makes all the difference.
As a general rule, I think sizing up is always a good idea, particularly if you’re opting for a classic, round-neck style, as it gives you some wiggle room when styling (half-tucked into jeans, for example) and when washing (allowing for some shrinkage is a smart move).
This season, I’m loving polo-style necklines, the colour navy, rib detailing on cuffs, and cardigans in all forms. My favourites include the lamsbwool crew neck sweater from Uniqlo (I size up or buy the men’s which is the same as women’s but slightly longer), anything by Jenni Kayne (her Everyday Sweater and Cooper Cardigan are fuss-free but excellent shapes), and the wide selection on offer by both Cos and & Other Stories.
I’ve always been a stickler for only buying woollen or cashmere knits in the past, but the older I get (and the more I learn about laundry!), the more I realise that a mix of fabrics is actually a smart move. Wool mixed with cotton, acrylic, or viscose makes for a nicer feel on the skin and easier washing, so don’t be turned off when reading the tags and seeing a medley of fabrications (I’d still definitely avoid all acrylic/polyester though!).
Before I go, a reminder that all knitwear can look worse for wear if you don’t launder and look after them properly, so please, please, make sure you hand wash, or at least use the wool setting on your machine when washing, always dry flat on a towel, and fold, never hang in your wardrobe. To eliminate any musty smells, I pop baking soda in a glass jar with a lid with holes on top in my wardrobe — works a treat!
Alright, time to get toasty!
