How To Wear White Denim (& Still Look Cool)

Not that white denim isn’t cool, per se, but a few years of bad shapes and bad lycra have given this wardrobe staple a bad rap. No more! Well, not with my handy hints and shopping picks, anyway… Here’s how to wear white denim well this season.

  1. Wide leg, slouchy, oversized or loose-fitting are your friends in silhouettes when it comes to white denim. I stand by this for all body shapes — avoid jeans that are too fitted and you’ll find a style that works for you. This season’s barrel or horseshoe jeans are surprisingly flattering on most people.

  2. White comes in many shades — I’ve found that stark white is often too much for jeans, but a milkier hue (in between white and ecru) is softer and really lovely.

  3. Unless you actually want a preppy vibe, I’d avoid wearing very obvious pieces with your white denim, such as white sneakers or navy and white stripes. The nautical look is cute, until it isn’t. Instead opt for a coloured or neutral sneaker and stripes in an unexpected colour combo.

  4. White on white works when texture is involved. If you want an all-white ensemble, try reaching for a knitted tank or lace top, or break things up with a black or tan belt. You want to avoid looking like a painter or dental hygienist, you know?

  5. I’m also not a huge fan of mixing black with white denim, with the exception being shoes and accessories. Neutrals work better, or you can’t go wrong with a classic blue in every shade.

  6. If you need to add a heel to your white denim outfits, I’d avoid anything too high. There’s something about a low stacked heel, or a classic kitten heel, that makes the overall look appear more modern.

  7. Accessories matter, especially when you’re working with white denim shorts or a skirt. Think of your outfit as a blank canvas and accessorise wisely — raffia details, metallics, beaded necklaces, oversized silhouettes — there’s something about a fresh, clean denim hue that allows for more fun with all the extras.

  8. Vanish Napisan Spray will be your laundry saviour, trust me.
